Byzantine Period
After the division of the Roman Empire, Bergama came under the rule of the Eastern Roman Empire, known as the Byzantine Empire. During this time, the city gained importance as a religious center. In the early Christian period, Pergamon was mentioned in the Bible as one of the Seven Churches of Asia, further enhancing its spiritual identity.
The city, surrounded by walls in the Byzantine era, continued to exist as a military and religious stronghold. Several buildings on the acropolis were reused, converted into churches, or newly built. Bergama survived until the final centuries of the Byzantine Empire, preserving its heritage as a settlement marked by diverse cultural influences.
