Republican Period
With the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, Bergama entered a phase of modernization and began to be preserved as a site of significant cultural heritage. Scientific excavations of ancient ruins helped highlight the city’s historical identity once again. Developments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure further supported Bergama’s growth during the Republican era.
Today, Bergama is recognized as a center of cultural tourism, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its layered historical landscape. With its parchment legacy, archaeological sites, traditional crafts, and festivals, Bergama has continued to blend history with modern life throughout the Republican period.
